Windows 7 Series - A serious phone contender?
Sun, 28 Feb 2010 12:06:00 +1000

By now you have probably seen the latest news on Windows 7 series, the next generation operating system for Windows Mobile devices.

It look sensational. It is more intuitive, user friendly and best of all designed for touchscreens.
Cleverly the best bits of Windows Mobile such as the lock screen and today screen have been retained but the worst bits (small menus not touchscreen friendly) have been replaced.

The not-so-good news is the lack of backwards compatibility which will mean a slow lead time until application providers have had a chance to redesign their programs for the new operating system.

I use windows Mobile and I am not concerned about my existing apps as long as the software vendors make the effort to upgrade their applications to ensure Windows 7 Series provides a competitive offering.

I think they have done the right thing. To be competitive they need to provide an OS which works the same on any device, provides the user interface we expect of a touchscreen smartphone today and provides the stability we expect. Windows Mobile had outlived this and while ultimately configurable, like Windows desktops, also left it more likely to suffer stability problems due to such a wide range of configurations.

Only time will tell. That's my line.
